Bootcamp Life Week 6 - We can see the finish line...

What was happening this week? Some trivia first:

What do bootcamp students do during their lunch breaks? Hangman!

What do I have for breakfast every day? Coffee with Butter!

Flatiron School organized an event on Thursday: The Science Fair - graduating Flatiron students present their end projects at school to all younger cohorts. It was inspiring to see what students (who are just 9 weeks ahead of us) were able to build.

Build your comic book, just upload pictures and enter text

Create weekly meal plan with saved recipes and automated grocery list

Draw on a canvas simultaneously with your friends

Play buying and selling with real stockmarket data

Manage gift lists for events and friends

The project that impressed me most:

A fully-fledged online multi-player poker room

The poker room was the most algorithm heavy project that I encountered at the science fair and I could not believe that a bootcamp graduate was able to pull this off in two and a half weeks. Everything was made from scratch - from game logic to illustrations! Like most of the projects the student used Rails for back end, React for front end, and web sockets for the multi-player part.

Our class had their own project to work on this week, so we also got our presentation time. I was in an amazing group with two other very smart individuals and working with them was a pleasure.

It is incredible to see what we built in 4 days. Whenever I compared what we had 9 am in the morning with 6 pm at the end of the day, it felt very satisfying and rewarding. For comparison, on Day 1 our app looked like this:

Also, see separate blog post on the project.

So all in all, this week - although only 6 out of 15 - gave us a taste of the dawning end of the program. Science fair, working on big projects ourselves, and in a "classic" bootcamp curriculum (12 weeks) , we'd already be at half of the program! We have only 6 weeks left before we start our end project ourselves! So I am ready for next week: moving away from Ruby and Rails and tackling the exciting world of Javascript and React!
